This article explains how editing live templates impacts tasks within your project. You will learn what happens to tasks that are already open and how updates apply moving forward.
1. Understand Live Template Edits
The Answer
No. Editing a template does not change tasks that are already open or in progress. Template changes are forward-looking only.
What happens to each task type:
| Task State | Effect of Template Edit |
|---|---|
| Open (generated, not started) | On next page load, employee may see updated template when they open it |
| In Progress (employee has started) | Continues with the version started — previously recorded answers are preserved exactly |
| Completed | Not affected — submission reflects the template as it was at time of submission |
| Future tasks (generated after the save) | Use the updated template version |
You do not need to republish or rebuild the project. The project picks up the updated template automatically on the next generation cycle.
Practical example: You add a new required step on Tuesday. Tasks already generated on Monday that haven't been started may include the step (if not yet opened). Tasks already in progress won't. Tasks generated Wednesday onward will always include the new step.
This article explains how live template edits affect open and new tasks, clarifying that changes apply only to future tasks and completed tasks remain unchanged. For more details, see related template management articles.
